May 20 – Review by Officer Nice – FROM HELL – RATS & RAVENS (Fastball Music / Rock Inc.)

Last I wrote a review about a band and afterwards I noticed the band and fans were pissed off. Okay, I wrote it was a bad album but I suppose that’s my freedom of speech, no? Actually I seldom write bad reviews… I really don’t. But that specific record was so bad I couldn’t find any good words about it, sorry guys. When I was looking for more information about this band, From Hell, I found out the reviews about their very first album were very bad too. So I was expecting some kind of crap although the band members are pretty famous and played in bigger bands before… Vicious Rumors, Forbidden, One Machine, Nevermore, Testament, Blind Illusion… Bizarre!  Well, in that case there’s only one way to find out: just listen!

And yes, after a few spins I really like From Hell. This is a dark combination of Thrash and Death Metal, a bit Nevermore meeting One Machine and Obituary. What I actually mean is that this album is full of vicious arrangements, razor sharp riffs, heavy pounding drums and bass lines and very harsh vocals. You don’t hear me say it reaches the level of the bands I just mentioned but this if for 100 % pure Metal and it sounds good! It is a varied album and so  it needs time. The tempo is changing constantly, a wall of sound is your part when you play it loud. I like the dark atmosphere in it. Maybe there’s a bit too often a lack of recognizable compositions but I suppose this wasn’t the main goal. This is the heavy kind of shit, it sounds very fat and more than once overwhelming. On vocals we find Sinn, who might be known because of the band Down Factor. His vocals are like or dislike, they fit the music although I often try to imagine how the music could sound with clear vocals. But that isn’t the issue here, From Hell wants to sound aggressive and dirty and they reached that objective easily. READ MORE…
