March 09 – Review by Stefan – SUBTERFUGE: Prometheus (Pure Steel Publishing)

In my hands I have the double CD of Poland based Subterfuge who show their second achievement “Prometheus” to the world. This successor to “Projections from the Past” (2018) has created a shock effect for me, in the positive sense of the word. It is my first acquaintance with Subterfuge and I must say that their way of musical approach knows how to impress me. No less than 16 songs are on their latest work, during a playing time of 93 minutes you will be pleasantly surprised in every possible way.

On the supplied picture I notice five musicians but according to the info sheet the band consists of eight people including a saxophonist and violist, a bit strange for a metal band, don’t you think ? But that’s exactly what Subterfuge is all about, a bit odd, yet somewhat unique. Make a note that you will be dealing with a progressive metal band with several musical twists including elements from the world of death metal and so much more. The beautiful and fragile, almost angelic female vocal lines alternate with clean and sturdy male vocals that do not shy away from the extreme at certain moments. The contrast of the vocal performance is sometimes miles apart, but I have to admit that the end result achieves a high score. READ MORE…
